Gateway of India
from Taj Mahal Hotel
Leica D-Lux 5
The Gateway of India was built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to Bombay in December 1911. Its design is a combination of both Hindu and Muslim architectural styles, the arch is in Muslim style while the decorations are in Hindu style. The Gateway is built from yellow basalt and reinforced concrete. The Gateway was opened on 4 December 1924, by the Viceroy, the Earl of Reading. The last British troops to leave India, the First Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry, passed through the Gateway in a ceremony on 28 February 1948
@Art, Interesting observation Art! It was decided to built the gateway in 1911 but took time to construct it.

on May 26, 2011Great shot Harsh - as ever, such a lot of interesting detail. I wouldn't like to be steering one of those boats - looks very hectic!

on May 26, 2011Wonderful image and fascinating information. Great vantage point. I'm confused though. It was built in 1911 but not opened until 1924?
