Daily photos 3rd year

At the Daily Gallery one picture, preferably taken that day; is shared with others. While that is difficult to follow (shooting everyday) I have been putting up a picture everyday and this is my THIRD year. It's been an enjoyable time viewing pictures of other members and learning new techniques and customs from different places. I think this is the best way to travel to places while sitting at home, and also making friends on the way! It has been a pleasure sharing my pictures and I thank all of you for taking the time to comment on my pictures. Earlier galleries: First year - Second year - Critiques welcome!

Catching up with news

One more from Ranakpur temple complex. While basking in the early morning sun, the two locals were catching up with news. The younger one was more interested in the gossip page! :)

Happy at work

Continuing my series of people at Ranakpur temple. In addition to the happy expressions, I liked the contrasting clothes of the two men. The old man is wearing a traditional turban with a shirt and a dhoti while the young man is attired in a pant & shirt.

Village girl

This girl's parents were working in the temple complex at Ranakpur. Her smile, when I showed her the pic, was priceless and made my day! I did got a print made and sent it over too, the least I could do...

Flower vendor

This old man was selling flowers outside Ranakpur temple. I liked the morning light adding a soft touch to his weathered face...
Best seen in large size.

Vil Uyana, Sri Lanka

We visited the Jetwing’s Vil Uyana hotel located near Sigiriya. Drawing from the local, rural traditions, the buildings grow not out, but into the landscape. The ‘habitats’ naturalized by local flora and fauna creates the timelessness of a healthy ecosystem providing the setting for peace and tranquility. With the first man-made lakes since King Parakramabahu’s era in the 11th century, this exciting feature allows for the first time in Sri Lanka dwellings to be built over water.

Some of you have wondered how I visit such fancy hotels and what I do for a living! :) Well, I have my own business and try and take one holiday a year. Quite a few of our abroad trips were with a small group of friends and one of them is in the travel business so we get to stay at nice places at very good prices and along with the local places we also get to see other hotels too!
Kelani River, Sri Lanka

The Academy Award-winning "The Bridge on the River Kwai" was filmed on the Kelani River near Kitulgala, although nothing remains now except the concrete foundations for the bridge. Kitulgala is also a base for white-water rafting, which starts a few kilometres upstream. More info on the shooting of the scene can be read at
Church, Sri Lanka

On our way to Kandalama from Tea Trails I noticed this quaint church on the roadside. We were running late so could not spend more time catching in details, my loss!

Sigriya

Located in the north-central province of Sri Lanka, Sigriya-a city, palace and garden complex centering a 200 metre high rock-is unofficially known as the 8th wonder of the world. Literally, the word Sigriya means the Lion Rock. Sigriya is Sri Lanka's most recognizable landmark and has been declared as a World Heritage Site.

The 650 ft monolith was once a rock fortress and a royal citadel from 477 to 495 AD. The most significant feature of the Rock would have been the Lion staircase leading to the palace garden on the summit. All that remains now are the two colossal paws and a mass of brick masonry that surround the ancient limestone steps and the cuts and groves on the rock face give an idea of the size and shape of the lion figure. There are also remains of paintings in some of the caves at the foot of the rock. Of special significance is the painting on the roof of the Cobra Hood Cave. The cave with its unique shape dates back to the pre-Christian era.

Climbing up the rock you will see the Mirror Wall, a highly polished rock surface that has weathered the times to shine and reflect even today. In a sheltered pocket are the famous frescoes of beautiful maidens, which appear to rise out of the clouds. A climb to the top is rewarded by a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside.
THIRD YEAR!
I have been tied down with work and didn't realise a second year had passed here at the Daily community! It's been an enjoyable year and as always I have appreciated viewing your pictures and learning new techniques and customs from different places. I think this is the best way to travel to places while sitting at home, and also making friends on the way! It has been a pleasure sharing my pictures and I thank all of you for taking the time to comment on my pictures.
