Daily photos 3rd year

At the Daily Gallery one picture, preferably taken that day; is shared with others. While that is difficult to follow (shooting everyday) I have been putting up a picture everyday and this is my THIRD year. It's been an enjoyable time viewing pictures of other members and learning new techniques and customs from different places. I think this is the best way to travel to places while sitting at home, and also making friends on the way! It has been a pleasure sharing my pictures and I thank all of you for taking the time to comment on my pictures. Earlier galleries: First year - Second year - Critiques welcome!

The Venetian Resort, Macau
On way to New Zealand, we made a stop at Macau and stayed at the Venitian Hotel. Macau has based itself into a mini Vegas and is full of glitz & glamour and obviously, casinos! Venitian is a huge hotel with 3000 rooms plus two theatres, canals with gondolas and shops. It's easy to get lost so a map of the hotel is given when you check-in! Unfortunately the stay was less than 24 hours, not enough to take in the huge hotel and city surroundings. We managed to see Zaia, a show by Cirque du Soleil!

This area was in the middle of the hotel and the sky was actually a ceiling (like the one in Vegas)! There were 'roadside' cafes with a sitting area in the middle.

I was away in Ahmedabad last few days and my cousin's Net was down so could not post or comment on the pics, will try & catch up soon.
CST terminus

Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, formerly Victoria Terminus, and better known by its abbreviation CST or Bombay VT, is a historic railway station in Mumbai which serves as the headquarters of the Central Railways. It is one of the busiest railway stations in India, and serves Central Railway trains terminating in Mumbai as well as the Mumbai Suburban Railway.

The station was designed by Frederick William Stevens, a consulting architect in 1887-1888. The design bears some resemblance to the St Pancras railway station in London. The station building was designed in the Victorian Gothic style of architecture. The building exhibits a fusion of influences from Victorian Italianate Gothic Revival architecture and traditional Indian architecture. Internally, the wood carving, tiles, ornamental iron and brass railings, grills for the ticket offices, the balustrades for the grand staircases and other ornaments were the work of students at the Bombay School of Art. The station stands as an example of 19th century railway architectural marvels for its advanced structural and technical solutions.

It took ten years to complete and was named "Victoria Terminus" in honour of the Queen and Empress Victoria.

In 1996, in keeping with the policy of renaming locations with Indian names, the station was renamed by the state government after Chatrapati Shivaji, the famed 17th century Maratha king. On 2 July 2004, the station was nominated as a World Heritage Site by the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO.

On 26 November 2008, two terrorists entered the passenger hall of the CST, opened fire and threw grenades at people. The terrorists were armed with AK-47 rifles. More than 50 people were killed in the attack.
Diwali 'dia'

Diwali means festival of lights and people put dias (lights) at home. Traditionally they used to be oil lamps but now all types of fancy lights are also used. We have dias in glasses with different colour gels and oil lamps in our verandah.

This was shot resting the camera on the parapet and shows the traffic and the Westside store opposite my home. .

Chopda pujan (writing of special prayer in the books of accounts)
BEST SEEN IN LARGE SIZE.

One day before the new year (as per the Gujarati calendar) the trading community traditionally performs a puja (religious ritual) that involves invoking Gods' blessings for a prosperous and successful year ahead. For this purpose businessmen write a 'prayer' on a special page in account books with a quill and black ink. The pic shows son Jay & his wife Lakshmi writing in the new books under sister Urvashi's guidance.
Lakshmi's wearing traditional sari in red with gold border. The black ink (in silever cup) and the quill are near Jay's leg. The fruits are later kept on the books which are laid out on a red cloth.
USA President Obama's visit to Mumbai (November 2010)

There is an unprecedented security in Mumbai for President Obama's visit. The area around Taj Mahal hotel where he's staying is sealed off for 2 days and the roads he'll be traveling are closed for 1 hour for vehicles as well as people. Mani Bhavan is quite close to my house and roads were closed from 2 pm. I managed to take some long shots with my tele when he was on his way and then took some more shots with the short zoom from a house around the corner.

HAPPY DIWALI!
This is pulled out from my Egypt trip, taken on a cruise down the Nile.

Here's wishing YOU ALL a VERY HAPPY DIWALI! Today is alo our 36th anniversary!

Diwali (or Deepavali) means festival of lights and is the homecoming of Lord Rama after a 14-year exile in the forest and his victory over Ravana. In the great epic Ramayana, the people of Ayodhya (the capital of his kingdom) welcomed Rama by lighting rows (avali) of lamps (deepa), thus its name.

Diwali celebrations are often spilled across several days starting with Dhanteras (dhan = wealth; teras = 13).This day falls on the 13th day of the second half of the lunar month.

Naraka Chaturdashi falls the 14th day on which demon Narakasura was killed by Lord Krishna, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Many people burn effigies of Ravana and anything they consider evil, almost an Indian representation of the Guy Fawkes tradition.

This is followed by the day of Lakshmi Puja, one where people wish friends and relatives Happy Diwali. Hindu homes worship Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, and Ganesh, the God of auspicious beginnings, and then light lamps all across the streets and homes to welcome prosperity and well-being.

The next day is the new year for those Hindus who follow the lunar calendar.

Finally the celebrations end with Bhau Beej, a day when brothers and sisters meet to express their love and affection for each other.

Ear cleaning!

A special service is offered to clean the ears with wax thinning oils and other ointments. In big - modern cities they are seen only in the old / poor areas or crowded areas like railway stations or temples but are quite common in small towns and villages.
