Daily photos 3rd year

At the Daily Gallery one picture, preferably taken that day; is shared with others. While that is difficult to follow (shooting everyday) I have been putting up a picture everyday and this is my THIRD year. It's been an enjoyable time viewing pictures of other members and learning new techniques and customs from different places. I think this is the best way to travel to places while sitting at home, and also making friends on the way! It has been a pleasure sharing my pictures and I thank all of you for taking the time to comment on my pictures. Earlier galleries: First year - Second year - Critiques welcome!

Periyar National Park and Tiger Reserve was established in the verdant stretches of Kerala in 1895 and declared a Tiger Reserve in 1978. The Periyar Widlife Sanctuary covers an area of 777 sq km, out of which 360 sq km is under thick and dense evergreen forests. Surrounded by the dense forests, it is quite popular for the Periyar Lake.
HAPPY DIWALI! Pic taken on 16th Oct when she was one month

Dear Friends, here's wishing YOU ALL a VERY HAPPY DIWALI! Diwali (or Deepavali) means festival of lights and is the homecoming of Lord Rama after a 14-year exile in the forest and his victory over Ravana. In the great epic Ramayana, the people of Ayodhya (the capital of his kingdom) welcomed Rama by lighting rows (avali) of lamps (deepa), thus its name.

Diwali celebrations are often spilled across several days starting with Dhanteras (dhan = wealth; teras = 13).This day falls on the 13th day of the second half of the lunar month - 23rd Oct this year. Naraka Chaturdashi falls on the 14th day on which demon Narakasura was killed by Lord Krishna, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Since Diwali symbolises the victory of good over evil, many people burn effigies of Ravana and anything they consider evil, almost an Indian representation of the Guy Fawkes tradition.

This is followed by the day of Lakshmi Puja (25th Oct this year) , one where people wish friends and relatives Happy Diwali. Hindu homes worship Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, and Ganesh, the God of auspicious beginnings, and then light lamps all across the streets and homes to welcome prosperity and well-being. The next day is the new year for those Hindus who follow the lunar calendar. Finally the celebrations end with Bhau Beej, a day when brothers and sisters meet to express their love and affection for each other.

Periyar National Park Thekkady

Cormorants and shags are medium-to-large seabirds. They are fish-eaters, dining on small eels, fish, and even water snakes. After fishing, cormorants go ashore, and are frequently seen holding their wings out in the sun. All cormorants have preen gland secretions that are used ostensibly to keep the feathers waterproof.

Day 4 -First day at mom Lakshmi's home.
As per Indian customs Lakshmi has gone to her parents' house with the baby. This is an old tradition which is carried on even now. The main reason was that the new mother would get rest at her mom's house whereas at husband's house she would have to chip in with work. The mother and the baby come back to husband's house after 40 days.

We all are counting days!

The Indian giant squirrel, or Malabar giant squirrel, (Ratufa indica) is a large tree squirrel species genus Ratufa native to India. It is an upper-canopy dwelling species, which rarely leaves the trees, and requires "tall profusely branched trees for the construction of nests. It travels from tree to tree with jumps of up to 6 m (20 ft). When in danger, the Ratufa indica often freezes or flattens itself against the tree trunk, instead of fleeing. Its main predators are the birds of prey and the leopard. The Giant Squirrel is mostly active in the early hours of the morning and in the evening, resting in the midday. It is a shy, wary animal and not easy to discover

ADDED LATER
Although the tanks have long vanished, the city of Bombay (now Mumbai) once had many water tanks within its city limits. They were once the only source of water to the city. The Framji Cowasji Tank bordered Esplanade was built by Framji Cowasji in 1831. In British times, dhobis used to wash the British soldiers clothes' here. It was filled up in the mid-17th century as the city began to expand. The lake used to be fed by a number of underground freshwater springs, which were recently uncovered while constructing the subway in the locality. A public library stands over the land that was the lake. All that remains of the tank is a plaque on a wall opposite Metro Cinema in South Mumbai.

Jackfruit
Thekkady

The jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus or A. heterophylla) is native to parts of Southern and Southeast Asia. It is the national fruit of Bangladesh, (locally called Kathal). The jackfruit tree is believed to be indigenous to the southwestern rain forests of India. The flesh of the jackfruit is starchy, fibrous and is a source of dietary fiber. The flavour is similar to a tart banana. Jackfruit is commonly used in South and Southeast Asian cuisines. It can be eaten unripe (young) when cooked, or ripe uncooked. The seeds may be boiled or baked like beans. The leaves are used as a wrapping for steamed idlis.

At Kyani Bakery & restaurant

On Sundays we four photographer friends often go off for a shoot. Last time we went to Kyani & Co, an Iranian cafe. Irani cafes or Iranian cafes got their popularity for their tea (chai) and freshly baked buns. Iranian cafés used to be numerous and popular but competition from modern cafés and fast food restaurants have left them behind. Many have closed down or are changing into pubs and restaurants. One of the most popular Iranian joint is the 104-year-old Kyani café, a heritage landmark near Metro in South Mumbai. Run by third generation of family, Kyani serves fresh bread, all kinds of biscuits from Khari to mouth-watering macaroons, puddings, custards, apple pies etc!
