Daily photos 3rd year

At the Daily Gallery one picture, preferably taken that day; is shared with others. While that is difficult to follow (shooting everyday) I have been putting up a picture everyday and this is my THIRD year. It's been an enjoyable time viewing pictures of other members and learning new techniques and customs from different places. I think this is the best way to travel to places while sitting at home, and also making friends on the way! It has been a pleasure sharing my pictures and I thank all of you for taking the time to comment on my pictures. Earlier galleries: First year - Second year - Critiques welcome!

Munnar is one of the most popular hill-resort towns in Kerala in southern India. The name Munnar is believed to be derived from the Malayalam/Tamil words Munu (three) and aaru (river), referring to the town's strategic location at the confluence of the Muthirappuzha, Nallathanni and Kundaly rivers.

Set at an altitude of 6000 ft in Idukki district, Munnar was the favored summer resort of the erstwhile British rulers in the colonial days. Unending expanse of tea plantations - pristine valleys and mountains- exotic species of flora and fauna in its wild sanctuaries and forests - aroma of spice scented cool air

After coming out of the water (yesterday's pic) the Cormorant was drying itself in the sun.

Cormorants and shags are medium-to-large seabirds. They are fish-eaters, dining on small eels, fish, and even water snakes. After fishing, cormorants go ashore, and are frequently seen holding their wings out in the sun. Follow the leader
Quail at Ranthambhore National Park

Very difficult to spot and photograph, I was lucky to get a few shots.

During my trip to Ranthmbhore for NGO work, we managed two trips to the park. Ranthambore National Park is in Sawai Madhopur District of Rajasthan state. The park covers an area of Approximately 400 sq Km and is famous for Tigers, Panthers, Sloth bears and other animals plus a large variety of birds.

Gray langurs
Khem Vilas, Ranthambhore

Gray langurs are large and fairly terrestrial, inhabiting forest, open lightly wooded habitats, and urban areas on the Indian subcontinent. Langurs mostly walk quadrupedally and spend half their time on and the ground and the other half in the trees.[7] They will also make bipedal hops, climbing and descending supports with the body upright, and leaps. Langurs can leap 3.7-4.6 m (12.0-15.0 ft) horizontally and 10.7-12.2 m (35-40 ft) in descending.

Nilgai Ranthambhore National Park

This was shot during my short visit early this month to Sawai Madhopur for meeting of an NGO I work for. We managed two rides in Ranthambhore National Park, a natural habitat famous for Tigers besides lots of other animals & birds.

The nilgai (Boselaphus tragocamelus), sometimes called nilgau, is an antelope, and is one of the most commonly seen wild animals of central and northern India and eastern Pakistan; it is also present in parts of southern Nepal. The mature males appear ox-like and are also known as blue bulls. The nilgai is the biggest Asian antelope.

Fotomom, yes tiring work for sure but it also was a hot and humid day and my friends and I were drenched after our shoot!
Linda, handcart pullers carry load for others, here he may have been taking the boards of crates and boxes from a fruit dealer to a scraps dealer.
Gail, the weather is hot and humid here and of course the rains! During the monsoon months of Jun-Sept Mumbai gets an average of 100" of rains!

Crawford Market (Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Mandai) is one of South Mumbai's most famous markets. It was built and donated in 1869 to the city by Cowasji Jehangir and was named after Arthur Crawford, the first Municipal Commissioner of the city. The market houses a wholesale fruit, vegetable and poultry market. One end of the market is a pet store. Most of the sellers inside the market nowadays sell imported items such as foods, cosmetics, household and gift items. It was the main wholesale market for fruits in Mumbai until March 1996, when the wholesale traders were relocated to Navi Mumbai (New Bombay).

Mangoes!
Mango stall at Crawford Market (Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Mandai)

In India summer means Mangoes! India is the largest producer of Mangoes and they come in different varieties. Alphonso, Benishaan or Benisha and Kesar mango varieties are considered among the best mangoes in India's southern states, while Dussehri and Langda varieties are most popular in the northern states.

Ripe mangoes are typically eaten fresh while 'Aamras' is a popular pulp/thick juice made of mangoes with and is eaten with chapattis, rice or pooris. Sour, unripe mangoes are used in chutneys, pickles, or side dishes, or may be eaten raw with salt, chili, or soy sauce. A cooling summer drink called panna or panha comes from mangoes.
