It was hot and she was carrying water bottles for her friends. The sign says it all...
Had to blur the people in background and bring out the details in the bottles.
Felt the image is more striking in B&W which is here:
Entrance

D300 17-55mm ISO 1250 f6.3 1/20

Entrance to the Temple of Tooth, also known as Dalda Maligawa, is one of the most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the world. Here, one of the Buddha's teeth is kept. The temple was built in the 17th century. A golden canopy has been added recently.

This was a difficult shot as the light was low and hence ISO 1250. Even then there was a constant stream of people coming and going...
Avocado stall
We spotted this vendor outside Botanical gardens as we entered Kandy city. They were ridiculously cheap, about 10-12 US Cents a piece! We bought a few and got the hotel chef to make a delicious Avocado dip to eat with crackers and potato chips!
==== comment added 19th Jan =====
The swastika (from Sanskrit: svástika स्वस्तिक ) is an equilateral cross with its arms bent at right angles, in either right-facing (卐) form or its mirrored left-facing (卍) form. The swastika can also be drawn as a traditional swastika, but with a second 90° bend in each arm. Archaeological evidence of swastika-shaped ornaments dates from the Neolithic period. It occurs mainly in the cultures that are in modern day India and the surrounding area, sometimes as a geometrical motif and sometimes as a religious symbol. It was long widely used in major world religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism.

Though once commonly used all over much of the world without stigma, because of its iconic usage in Nazi Germany the symbol has become controversial in the Western world.
Our first stop in Sri Lanka was Galle, the southern beach town. We stayed at the Fortress, an exquisite hotel with a fortress type of a facade. The architecture inside had Dutch and Portuguese styles. Situated next to the blue waters of the Indian Ocean it had a lot of open space and the rooms were also very spacious. A gym, a spa, a swimming pool over looking the sea and lush greenery made this a perfect place to relax after a day around the city.

This was a bit difficult to shoot as there was a bit light difference in the foreground, background and inside the building. I shot more for the highlight and then brought out the details in the roof in PP.
At night

The Fortress used to be lit up at night and the reflections added to its beauty. This was shot after a dinner on the deck and the camera was rested on the dinning table. I used the Live View to frame the shot. The angle was a bit crooked so had to straighten it and bring out details in a few dark areas. There is another shot in the gallery but I selected this as it has less of foreground and the people are bit more visible.
Mumbai Marathon

It's a bit long narrative but DO read till the end, there's a request...

The sixth Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon took place on Sunday, 19th January 2009. This was the first major public event since the terrorist attack in November 2008 and people responded in thousands. There were 35000 participants with hundreds of thousands lined up along the routes, cheering and lending support.

The race categories were Full Marathon (42.195 km), Half Marathon (21.097 km), Dream Run (6 km), Senior Citizens' Run (4.3 km) and the Wheelchair Event (2.5 km). The Full Marathon carries a prize money of $31,000 and has been won by Kenyan athletes in the last four years. Beside professional athletes, the participants included those who ran for different charities or NGOs. There were corporate teams and individuals too. Most of them carried some kind of message and the common theme was peace and anti-terror unity.

All the events started from CST the train terminal, one of the sites of the terror attacks. There was heavy security with extra metal detectors and scanners & helicopters. The route also passed the Trident-Oberoi hotel, another terrorist target.

As most of you may know, my daughter Vinati (Vini) is a downs-syndrome child. She is now 25 and after passing out from Sadhana school works at Om Creation, a sheltered workshop for mentally challenged. Om Creation & Sadhana School also took part with a contingent of workers, students, parents and well wishers. I have attended three previous Marathons — mostly as a photographer — and it has always been an exhilarating & humbling experience.

This year they had entered the Dream Walk event and I was there with Vini. She amazed me by walking more than 7 kms (besides the 6 kms walk, had to walk quite a bit to reach the venue and to get back home) without a complaint.

Needless to say it was an event that will remain in my memory for a long time to come.

The first shot shows Vini (24477) with Mandira Bedi, the brand ambassador of Om (also a TV, Stage and movie star) and a friend with other supporters. The second shows her walking with the Trident-Oberoi in the background.

REQUEST: Vini will be thrilled if you will spare a minute and include a message for her here.
THANK YOU!
Relief work at base of steps (Dalda Maligawa)
This relief work was at the base of the steps leading to the main temple.
The Temple of Tooth, also known as Dalda Maligawa, is one of the most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the world. Here, one of the Buddha's teeth is kept. The temple was built in the 17th century. A golden canopy has been added recently.
