Shot on a Sunday. This is round the corner from my house. The small building in front is a very old temple. The building behind it was built much after that and the last one a couple of years back.
Today is a special day for me, 151st day at the Daily gallery! It has been a terrific experience, sharing my pictures, getting favorable comments, some of them making it to the Daily as well as All Time Popular top 1000 pictures! While that's been gratifying, it's been a learning experience coming across some great work from the members here. I have learnt & tried new techniques with personal encouragement from a very helpful bunch of people of this grand gallery.

I must confess that when I joined the community I was not aware that one had to take & post a photo everyday. This is practically not possible for me because of my working hours, lack of photo opportunities & health; so I have tried to shoot on Sundays and other days as much as possible. To fill the gaps, I've posted pictures from my collections and hope I'll be excused for that.

Along the way I have made good friends, some of them on a personal basis too. What I like about this gallery is the personal touch, sharing not only images but also moments of our daily lives, ups & downs, attempts & achievements.

I look forward to continued participation here, getting and sharing joy along the way.

Thank you all.
Rafting on Ganges
Check the difference in the waters... tranquil in foreground and frothy white at the beginning of the rapids.
[Thanks to Lady K for spotting this in the original gallery.]

To answer Lady K's comment: Despite warnings from the rafting team I took my D200 Hassleblad XPan with one lens each; wrapped in towels in a waterproof duffel bag. Taking pictures was difficult as we were totally drenched and holding the cameras in wet hands! Not to mention the manual focusing of the XPan!
Himalayas, Ganges, Pilgrimage, Spa, Rafting, Ayurvedic Treatment, Yoga, Meditation, Nature, Camping.... if there is one word for all these, it's "Rishikesh"!

About Rishikesh
Rishikesh - known as the "City of the Divine"- is a spiritual center to which sages, rishis, saints and pilgrims have flocked for millennia. The roads of the city are lined with bustling market places of ethnic arts and handicrafts, fresh produce markets, holy shrines and orange -robed sadhus (priests). Then, the road narrows, the markets become more sparse and you come upon a foot bridge, suspended high over the sacred Ganga (Ganges) river. As you cross this bridge, the sun streaming through the Himalayas to warm your being, you will feel as if you have truly come home. It is no surprise that pilgrims are drawn here from all over the world. The awe-inspiring beauty of the place, the clear, flowing Ganga, the majestic mountains, and the lush green forests will embrace and rejuvenate your entire being.
Lakshman Jhula (Bridge) - Rishikesh
Shot with D200 18-70mm

Rishikesh is a photographer's delight but unfortunately we had a very brief stop there on way to Kanatal from Glass House on Ganges. To add to my woes, there was a slight but continuous drizzle and I did not have an umbrella! Still, I managed a few shots of the few people and the famous bridge.
Don't worry! Most times the processions go at a snail pace. The ropes are not for towing, they are to keep the group of people of that procession together.
Lucky Me!

YES! That's me with Zubin Mehta (the world famous orchestra conductor ) & Placido Domingo (of the three tenors & famous for his own achievements). Zubin Mehta is here with The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra for 5 performances in Mumbai. Daniel Barenboim (Pianist), Pinchas Zukerman (Violininst) & Barbara Frittoli (Soprano) are the other stars.

The photographs were taken at a press conference this morning. Son Jay's friend Lakshmi is Arts & Culture Editor of a national daily and she managed to get me there. I will soon put up pictures shot there but thought of sharing this (two pics actually) shot by Lakshmi.

Thanks for making my day Lakshmi!
Rehearsal

Yesterday's luck continued today! Lakshmi had managed to get a press pass for today's rehearsal (morning 10 to 12) at the Homi Bhabha Auditorium (refer yesterday's pic).

http://hershy.smugmug.com/gallery/4836391_ACj8A/1/390061151_zKMmL/Large

It was a difficult situation as flash obviously wasn't allowed and they did not want SLRs making CLICK-CLACK noise! So Nikon was kept home and I shot with Leica Digilux 2 and Hassleblad Xpan (film camera). Invitees and press were only allowed in the upper part of the auditorium but slowly I did make it up to the 10th row! The pictures were shot handheld in JPG at ISO 400 (Digi maximum).

The rehearsal included some of the pieces they will play tommorow at the Brabourne stadium: parts of Carmen (Bizet) , Polkas (J Strauss), Intermezzo from Act III - Manon Lescaut (Puccini) Tonight (West Side Story), & Granada! There were couple more which I could not recognise. And yes, I AM going for the concert! :-) Could'nt get tickets for the other performances - guess you can't be lucky all the time! I really can't complain as this was a unique experience - enjoying the music and taking pictures!

This picture was with f2.8 at 1/15 sec. I had to correct the color slightly, crop it a bit and adjust the light on the stage and the auditorium.
Placido Domingo

I know this is similar to yesterday's picture of Zubin Mehta but like Zubin, Placido was also full of expressions and thought of sharing them with you all.

The concert was as expected, AWESOME and worth every penny (Rupee)! It was at a stadium and a light drizzle started in the evening. Rains at this time of the year are unexpected but the organisers had not left anything to chance. The stage was well made for acoustics as well as rain and the spectators were given disposable raincoats! The drizzle slowed down considerably and stopped after half an hour and it was a unique experience! They played a variety of pieces - most are listed in my earlier picture - and it was a nonstop performance from 830 to 1020. It ended with a standing ovation and spectacular fireworks show. A memorable evening indeed!
