==== ONE YEAR COMPLETE! ====
Today's picture is special. It not just marks my 365th contribution to the Daily gallery, it reminds me that its been a year here. A year-long experience of understanding and learning about new cultures, places and people; a year-long association with like-minded people and a year-long friendship with so many of you. The encouragement and support I've got from all of you in this duration, is something I cherish and respect. Looking forward to many many more such interactions to come.
Kalaripayattu 2
D300 ISO 400 f5.6 1/60 18-105mm lens

The engagement dinner of Romita & Wilson had traditional Kerala cuisine and performances. I had never shot such action shots before and realised how difficult it is! To add to my woes, the flash batteries were dying! :( I would have loved to experiment and take some shots with slow sync capturing a bit of a motion in the figures. Still, I am quite happy with the results...

Kalaripayattu - The Orient's treasure trove, a gift to the modern world and the mother of all martial arts. Legend traces the 3000-year-old art form to Sage Parasurama- the master of all martial art forms and credited to be the re-claimer of Kerala from the Arabian Sea. Kalaripayattu originated in ancient South India. Kung- fu, popularized by the monks of the Shoaling Temple traces its ancestry to Bodhi Dharma - an Indian Buddhist monk and Kalaripayattu master.
Another shot from the Kalaripayattu martial arts - here the 'warrior's' sword is broken...
Bharatnatyam Dancers

D300 ISO 400 f5.6 1/60 18-105mm lens

The dinner following the engagement of Romita & Wilson had performances by local dancers. Here two young dancers are awaiting their turn.

Bharatanatyam is a classic dance form originating in Tamil Nadu, a state in Southern India and is also the National Dance of India. This dance form denotes various 19th and 20th century reconstructions of Cathir, the art of temple dancers. Cathir in turn, is derived from ancient dance forms. Bharatanatyam is usually accompanied by the classical Carnatic music.
D300 ISO 400 f8 1/125 18-105mm lens

Grandniece Romita had Mehendi put on her feet a day before her wedding. Mehendi is paste from Henna and applied on hands & feet on special occasions. Once it's completely dry, it's washed off and the colour remains for a few days.
Makak Monkey at Uluwatu temple
Bali

This was shot during my Bali trip. Tourists are asked to take off sunglasses before entering the premises as the monkeys are known to snatch them off! One lady tourist did not and within minutes this big fellow jumped onto her back, snatched the glasses and ran off! When the guide offered him a banana he threw the glasses down and went on top of this stone pillar to enjoy the 'offerings'!! :)
Sunset at Vembanad Lake

At Kerala, hosts Daksha & Prem had organised boat rides for the guests on Vembanad Lake (Vembanad Kayal or Vembanad Kol), India's longest lake and also one of the largest lakes here. The Vembanad wetland system covers an area of over 1512 km and is approximately 14 kilometres wide at its widest point..

The ride was along the coast with a lot of greenery, something that Kerala is famous for. We also saw a couple of Houseboats on the way. With overcast sky the sunset was not a clear one. It was still scenic though!

This shot is by son Jay.
• Abu Simbel, Egypt

Besides the Pyramids, a must-see in Egypt are the temples of Abu Simbel, situated 280 km from Aswan. The two temples built by Ramesses II are dedicated to Re-Harakhte, and that of his wife, Nefertari dedicated to Hathor. Built 3000 years ago, they were discovered by J. L. Burckhardt in 1813.

The statues rise to 67 feet and are a majestic sight but the site is also famous for another reason. The original temples were built in a valley that was going to be submerged in Lake Naser with the waters from the new High Dam. In 1964 the Egyptian Govt., with the support of UNSECO shifted the temples, stone by stone; to the present site and took four years to complete.
