Daily Photos 2nd year

At the Daily Gallery one picture, preferably taken that day; is shared with others. While that is difficult to follow (shooting everyday) I have been putting up a picture everyday and this is my SECOND year. It's been an enjoyable time viewing pictures of other members and learning new techniques and customs from different places. I think this is the best way to travel to places while sitting at home, and also making friends on the way! It has been a pleasure sharing my pictures and I thank all of you for taking the time to comment on my pictures. Earlier galleries: First year - Critiques welcome!

NOTE: Thank you all for your birthday & Diwali wishes! I am busy with work, Diwali and other things so have not been able to comment but hope to catch up soon. Have a nice weekend!

http://www.javeri.net
 • Happy Diwali! (Pic 271 2nd year - 16 Oct 2009)
The pic was shot at Ahmedabad last year during my grand nephew's engagement. The brass lamp in the foreground has cotton wicks in oil. The blurred lights in the background are strings of small oil lamps.

Here's wishing YOU ALL a VERY HAPPY DIWALI!

Diwali (or Deepavali) means festival of lights and is the homecoming of Lord Rama after a 14-year exile in the forest and his victory over Ravana. In the great epic Ramayana, the people of Ayodhya (the capital of his kingdom) welcomed Rama by lighting rows (avali) of lamps (deepa), thus its name.

Diwali celebrations are often spilled across several days starting with Dhanteras (dhan = wealth; teras = 13).This day falls on the 13th day of the second half of the lunar month.

Naraka Chaturdashi falls the 14th day on which demon Narakasura was killed by Lord Krishna, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Many people burn effigies of Ravana and anything they consider evil, almost an Indian representation of the Guy Fawkes tradition.

This is followed by the day of Lakshmi Puja, one where people wish friends and relatives Happy Diwali. Hindu homes worship Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, and Ganesh, the God of auspicious beginnings, and then light lamps all across the streets and homes to welcome prosperity and well-being.

The next day is the new year for those Hindus who follow the lunar calendar.

Finally the celebrations end with Bhau Beej, a day when brothers and sisters meet to express their love and affection for each other.

• Milestone (Pic 270 2nd year - 15 Oct 2009)

Today I cross a milestone, finish 60! Phew! Years have certainly flown by... growing up with parents, uncles & sisters was an experience... then came Swarup followed by Jay & Vini and now, Lakshmi! Not to forget our darling pet Dash! All of them have been ever so caring and loving. Along the way I've also made some wonderful friends here and elsewhere — friends who I can rely on, learn from and share laughter and tears. Thank you, all of you... God bless

This was shot on Saturday 10th Oct. when we had a dinner for friends. Unknown to me Sunday was my b'day as per Gujarati calendar and Swarup surprised me with a cake! It was a great way to share joy with friends and family.
Mahatma Gandhi used such a desk for his work.

NOTE: Such desks were quite common in the earlier days when people did not use desk (table) & chairs. People used to sit on thick mattresses and use such desks for writing. In my old office we had a room with a similar setup!
This was a novel idea and will post a couple of more items in the next few days. Such chairs were quite famous AND comfortable too!
