Bandra - Worli Sea link : The first 43 were shot by son Jay (I was driving) when we crossed the newly opened Bandra-Worli sea link on our way to the airport. It was a cloudy evening and light was poor. I tried to go as slow as possible without disrupting the traffic! The images were shot with the Nikon D700. Most are at ISO 2400 and on the return journey he shot with ISO 6400.

The daytime pictures were shot by me on way back home from the airport (I wasn't driving!). :)

The 5.6 kms (3 miles) long bridge with a 600 mts. long cable-stayed bridge connects the western suburbs to central Mumbai and should ease the congestion of traffic. The bridge is not totally completed. The parallel four-lanes portion is not finished yet and that's the reason for the crane. The height of the cable-stayed tower is 126m, which is equal to a 43-storey tower, The length of steel wires used in the project is equivalent to the circumference of the Earth & each cable can take a weight of 900 tons.

Ganpati Visarjan 2009 : Once again, this year I shot Ganpati Visarjan scenes, this time with friends Darshan & Suchit. Did not shoot much as had taken daughter Vinati along to show her the idols & crowds from close quarters.

Started by freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak as an occasion to bring the masses together irrespective of class, against the British rulers, Ganeshotsav is the celebration of the Hindu elephant deity Lord Ganesha's visit to the homes of devotees.

Ganesh Chaturthi is the first day of the 10- or 11-day festival where idols of the deity in various shapes, sizes and colours (often with news-based themes) are brought to the homes or colonies of devotees. On the final day (Anant Chaturdashi), the idols are carried by hand, balancing them on the head, pulled in hand carts or trucks, to be immersed in the nearest sea, river or lake.

The process of taking the idols for immersion is marked with much fanfare -- loud music, resonating beats and dancing devotees bid adieu to Lord Ganesha only to welcome him again the next year with equal excitement

Queer Azadi (indepedence) march : Yesterday - Sunday 16th August - Mumbai witnessed the second annual rally of around 2000 LGBT (Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals & Transgender) community. Dressed in colourful attire they gathered at August Kranti Marg (near Gowalia Tank maidan) and walked up to Azad Maidan near Fort. The parade was set up for people to notice this community and accept them as a part of the society. Celebrities believing in their cause also showed up to show support. The pictures cover the gathering at A K Marg and march up to Girgaum Chowpatty

Paryusan procession : Paruysan (Pajusan) Parva
Paryusana Parva

The Paryusana Parva is the most important festival for the Jains. This is the eight-day period during which many Jains fast and carry out the religious activities. This period falls in the months of Shravana and Bhadra (August or September). During the rainy season in India Jain monks stop walking from one town to another and settle in a fixed location with the purpose of reducing the injury to the living things now springing to life. Often a township invites respected monks to stay in its vicinity during the rainy season (sometimes with a beautifully written manuscript invitation) and the people receive them with great pomp and rituals. A course of lectures or sermons by a monk or other respected person is a regular feature of the Paryusana Parva. The word Paryusana is derived from two words meaning (gada) ‘a year’ and ‘a coming back’. It is a period of repentance for the acts of the previous year and of austerities to help shed the accumulated karmas. It should be remembered that the austerity is not just to shed karmas, but to control the desire for sensual pleasures as a part of the spiritual training to prevent the accumulation of the new karmas. During this period some people fast for all eight days, some for the lesser periods (a minimum of three days is suggested in the scriptures), but it is considered obligatory to fast on the last day of the Paryusana Parva. Fasting usually involves complete abstinence from any sort of food or drink, but some people do take boiled water during the daytime. There are regular ceremonies in the temple and discourses of Kalpa Sutra (one of the sacred books) in the Upashraya during this time. Kalpa Sutra contains the detailed account of Mahavira's life, is read to the congregation. On the third day of the Paryusana Parva the Kalpa Sutra receives a very special reverence and may be carried in the procession. On the fifth day, at a special ceremony, the auspicious dreams of Mahavira's mother, queen Trishala, are demonstrated. Listening to the Kalpa Sutra, taking active steps to prevent the animal killing, asking and offering forgiveness to all living beings, visiting the neighborhood temples, etc., are some of the important activities during this time. The final day of Paryusana is the most important of all. On this day those who have observed the fasts are specially honored. This is also the day when Jains ask for forgiveness from the family, friends and foes alike for any acts they might have committed towards them in the previous year. Therefore this annual occasion of repentance and forgiveness is very important. Shortly after Paryusana it is the custom to organize a Swami Vastyalaya-dinner when all the Jains get together and renew their friendship with each other regardless of their socio-economical status.

Sassoon docks : Pictures shot with Sharookh at Sassoon docks.
The Sassoon Docks is one of the few docks open to the public in Mumbai, India. It was built by David Sassoon, a Baghdadi Jew. The docks is the main fish loading and trading centre in South Mumbai.

Would you believe this was my first trip there? Thanks to Sharookh (not Khan but Mehta!) for taking me there. It's a BUSY place and so colorful you don't know what NOT to shoot! This was evening time when people are busy preparing to sail next day. Morning is when they return with the catch and is another sight all together.

Most shots are jpg files with no PP except for a bit of a crop and light adjustments in few pictures.

Babulnath : Babulnath Temple, Mumbai

Sunday shoot with Sharookh. Doing a test run on Leica Digilux 2. Lovely camera with crisp details and perfect natural colors. Leica shots in jpg, Nikon in RAW. No major PP except levels & contrast & cropping.

The temple was originally built in 1780 and a tall spire was added in 1900. It's in the heart of the city on a small hill at about 1000 ft. above sea level.
